WEST ISLAND WOMEN'S INDUSTRIAL SOFTBALL LEAGUE
RULES 2006

Click here for 2006 revised schedule (2007 schedule not yet published)

1.
Official Softball rules are to be allowed (especially in the case of a protest) except where noted.
2.
A list of all team players (limit of 25 including a maximum of 3 external players) must be provided to the team in charge of Standings before the start of the season. A finalized list must be sent by July 1. Non-external players must be company employees, relatives of company employees or alumni. The home team must fax in their scores the following day to the team in charge of standings.

FAX:514-428-4946
The score sheets must carry the surnames and initials of the players.
3.

Pitching rules to be followed: Rule #6 (fast pitch) except NO windmill delivery; no above-the-shoulder wind-up; the pitcher may not commence her delivery with the ball concealed behind her back; the ball must be kept in continuous motion.
4.
Each team will consist of a maximum of 10 players on the field at one time (only these players may go to bat).  The catcher must wear a face mask, a neck protector and a chest protector.
5.
After 1 warning, a player will be called out for throwing her bat.
6.
A pitcher missing a throw from the catcher does not constitute "ball in play" (local rule).  However, if the runner is at least half-way to the next base when the catcher returns tha ball to the pitcher, then a stolen base may be allowed.  This judgement decision resides with the umpire only.
7.
Stealing bases - the runner must not leave the base until the ball crosses home plate.
8.
Dropped third strike: the batter is allowed to try to advance to first base.  If first base is occupied and there are less than two outs, the batter is automatically out.  If there are two outs, the batter may try to advance to first even if first is occupied.
9.
Ball out of play: when a ball is thrown out of play, all base runners may advance one base (base achieved plus one base).  Prior to the game, umpire must explain "out of play" boundaries to coaches.  The umpire is to enforce the infield fly rule.
10.
The pitching mound can be 35 or 40 feet from home plate, will be pre-set by the home-team pitcher and will not be moved.  The visiting pitcher may choose either distance before the start of the game and both pitchers must continue from their chosen distance for the duration of the game.  One foot must be on the rubber from wind-up to release.  Bases are to be set 60 feet apart.
11.
A minimum of 7 players (regular season only) must be on the field 15 minutes after game time (unless otherwise arranged), or else the game is defaulted.  Games are to start at 6:00.  If a team is reduced to 6 players or less, then this team automatically defaults the game and the score will be recorded as being 7-0 for the opposing team.
12.
The home team must declare a rainout by notifying the umpire by 4:30 and the opposing team by 3:30 p.m. on the day of the game.  If this isn't done, the team having less tha 6 girls 15 minutes after the start of the game, defaults the game, the score being 7-0.  Re-scheduled games must be played during the scheduled season, and within the following seven days during playoffs.
13.
A maximum of 5 runs per inning is allowed per team during the entire season, including the palyoffs, with the last inning allowing unlimited runs for both teams.
14.
If, at the end of the 4th inning or later, one team is ahead by 15 runs, that shall be declared the official score (mercy rule).  The teams may, however, complete the game if they so desire.
15.
In the case of a tie game at the end of 7 complete innings, extra complete innings must be played until the home umpire calls the game.  If the game is called because of darkness, etc., then the next time the 2 teams play each other the tie game must be completed before starting the regular scheduled game.
16.
For a game to be called because of rain, darkness, etc., 4 complete innings (or the home team is ahead after the visitors have batted in the 4th inning) must be played to be considered an official game.
17.
The home team will supply one new ball for each of their home games along with bases (if necessary) and the other team provides a decent back-up ball. The official legal softball is the 12 inch .47 COR leather Rawlings Silverback model # SBU12W47L.  The previous official softball (177S) may also be used, until stock is expired and as long as the same type of ball is used for the entire game.
18.
In case of an injury with spares on the bench, the injured player wil be replaced by one of those spares.  If all players have already been played, the injured member may be replaced by one that has already played.  This rule only applies to injuries and not to players leaving the game for other reasons.
19.
There will be no pinch runners of any kind.  If a player is injured and can not run, then she must leave the game; if player is injured after gaining first base, the last one out before her should run in her place.
20.
Team players will bat in the order established before the start of the game.  If player arrives after the game has started, she will be placed at the bottom of the batting order.
21.
Players must have played at least four of the regular games to be able to participate in the play-offs.
22.
Under no circumstances are alcoholic beverages or drugs allowed on the field or premises.
23.
If 2 teams are tied for 1st place at the end of the season, first the record of wins and losses of these 2 teams against each other are assessed.  If the tie remains, then an extra game is played to determine the final holder of 1st place.  This rule will apply for a tie between teams for any standing at the end of the year
24.
Presence of 1 umpire for regular season and 2 umpires for playoffs
25.
The only reason to cancel a game is rainout
26.
The Batter and all players on the base must wear a softball helmet.
