Points of interest, Quick Tips, & Out Of The Usual Plays

- Runners on 1st & 3rd. Ball is hit to shallow left field. Runner on 1st thinking the ball would not be caught takes off for 2nd base. Backpedaling shortstop makes a fantastic catch. R3 tags up and scores. Shortstop finally gets up and fires the ball to 1st base to retire R1 for the 3rd out. Umpire indicates run scores. Defensive coach argues that the play at 1st was a force play and the 3rd out of the inning, so no run scores.

Ruling:  This is a timing play. As long as R3 touches home plate before the out at 1st, the run counts. (Rule 5, Sec.8)  Also this is NOT a force out. (Rule 1, Sec. 29)

They Said It

should never hold their indicators in front of their eyes.

-A medical alert bracelet, watch or chain is not considered jewellery.
-The replacement player is for the blood rule. While the replacement runner is for the two (2) out catcher rule.
-A runner who has crossed the commitment line in SP cannot return to 3rd base unless he wants to return to tag up on a caught fly ball.
-A runner can run anywhere on the field as long as he is not being played on. He/she still must touch the bases in proper order.

batter - Bases loaded, no outs. Runner on second runs in front of a charging shortstop to field a batted ball, rather than staying on his base path to 3rd base. Shortstop bobbles ball and cannot make an easy play at any base.

Ruling: Dead ball. Runner out. R3 goes back to 3rd, R1 is forced to 2nd because the batter is awarded 1st base. Bases loaded again with 1 out. Rule 8 sec 9 art l. & Rule 9 sec K-Q.

- R3 & R2. 2 outs. Catcher obstruction called, but batter hits ball to center field, R3 & R2 score, but batter remains in batter's box. Safe call made on R2 at home plate. Ball returned to pitcher, who throws to 1st to retire batter who for some reason is still standing in the batter's box through all this action.

Ruling: Dead ball after all play has stopped. Option play. Coach has the option of taking catcher obstruction, which places the batter on 1st, and R3 & R2 remain on bases with still 2 outs. The other option of taking the result of the play is not really an option. Since the batter's out at 1st means no runs can score, and the inning would be over.  Rule 8 sec 1d, 3&4.

umps  -Dorval Men's league, 1 out, runner on 3rd. Ball hit to deep left field. R3 thinks catch will not be made leaves 3rd base and crosses the commit line as a great catch is made. R3 returns to 3rd. Umpire rules R3 out for recrossing the commit line.

Ruling: A runner may return over the commit line to tag-up. R3 stays on 3rd with 2 out. Rule 1.Sec 17 d. (SP)

-Pierrefond Men's league. Runner on 3rd. Hard fair grounder down 3rd base line hits R3 on leg that is in contact with base. 3rd baseman (F5) playing behind the line.

Ruling: Dead ball, R3 not out, and batter is awarded 1st. Should F5 have being playing in for a bunt, the ball would remain alive.
