Guidelines and Reminders
2012

1. NEW RULES FOR 2011:
See rule book 2010-12:  (any boxed information) also see handout for quick reference.

2. GROUND RULES:
a.-Unless published by a league, allow as wide a margin for live ball areas using safety and common sense.  Remember to review those rules with fellow umpire and team coaches.

3. SCHEDULING:
   a. - Advise of rain-outs, defaults, forfeits, cancellations, ejections and if a double-header turns into a single game, especially at play-off time, when a series ends earlier than expected.
b.- Advise also of major game disruptions.  Teams and date.
c.-Games are normally assigned/posted on a Saturday, earlier if possible. E-mail will be sent to advise of the posting. Please check award page on our site for the following week's assignments, and simply reply to the e-mail as acknowledgement. Otherwise games have to be rescheduled, resulting in a fine. Games may be accepted and then traded, just make sure the scheduler is advised for rain-outs and pay purposes.
   d. - If unavailable for certain days of the following week or month, please advise scheduler before that time.  Friday at noon is the normal cutoff time.  (see Unavailability Form)
e.-It is up to the individual umpire if he chooses to do a forfeit game.  You are paid to do league games only.
f.-Check with the scheduler before switching a play-off game. Unnecessary/unpleasant calls from leagues were made in the past.

 4. PAY:
a.-The treasurer keeps weekly records of all games umpired. To avoid any hassles at years end, keep a running count of your games.  Pay day is normally at the end of the season; however advances are available on request, pending payment from the leagues.
   b. - No pay when second game of a double-header is forfeit.
   c. Rates per game:  varies, see Ump Assignment page.

5. UNIFORM AND EQUIPMENT:
   a. - Softball Canada embossed shirt is compulsory.
   b. - Softball Canada caps for the base umpire position are also compulsory.
   c. - Remainder as outlined on site.

6. ODDS AND ENDS:
a.- When new league bylaws surface, or when you run into a weird play, keep the UIC advised in order that the information can quickly be past on to the association members.
b.-If you decide to eject a player or enforce a decision that could result in a protest, make sure your fellow umpire is aware of your call.
c.-Once a game has started, an umpire will cause a delay only in the cases of personnel injury or family emergency.
d.-Let your fellow umpire be aware of your presence at the park so that a replacement umpire is not unnecessarily called out.
