So you want to become an Umpire?

- requirements
                  
-male or female, in reasonable physical health, should be able to cover 30' while a player runs 60'.  Previous ball experience a definite plus, but not a requirement.
-should have decent eyesight, even though many players, coaches, and spectators consider our vision somewhat fuzzy and limited.
-positive attitude, with a willingness to observe and learn from others, and to benefit from your own screw-ups.
-mature individual, minimum 18yrs of age to deal with sometimes overbearing players.
- equipment   see below:
  
-ball/strike indicator,
-whisk/plate brush,
-mask, with throat protector,
-ball bag, 12"x12",
-shin pads (for fast pitch leagues)
- uniform   see below
               
-dark navy blue cap, compulsory on bases. (never worn backwards)
-powder blue shirt, either mesh or Rapier style.
-dark navy blue pants, no pleats. 
-black rubber soled shoes, black or navy blue socks.
  (the cost of purchasing everything at once is often overwhelming for rookie umpires. It is recommended that officials gradually accumulate the necessary equipment.)

- knowledge:
                   
-WISUA Umps, should have rudimentary grasp of basic Softball Canada rules, and bylaws of the different leagues that we cover.   see Bylaws
-handouts, CDs, video tapes and instruction available for new umps.
-rule books are printed by Softball Canada every two years, and supplied by your association and are included in your annual dues.   see Resources



- Softball Quebec:
                   
-for those that are interested in umpiring beyond the WISUA leagues, at the provincial/national levels, clinics sanctioned by the provincial Softball body must be attended. -regardless of experience, we must all start at level 1.

-black mask with throat protector is available at many sport shops early in the season. Honigs has an excellent choice year round. Ask around to other umps, who may have an older mask tucked away in the back of a closet.
